Creating New Businesses and Lowering Environmental Impact through R&D
The UBE Group pursues R&D to create businesses that will be vital to its long-term growth. We are committed to cultivating technologies that help reduce GHG emissions and contribute to sustainable social growth.
R&D
The UBE Group's R&D program encompasses all four of its business domains--environment and energy, mobility, construction and infrastructure, and healthcare. From fiscal 2021, we will build on that foundation to undertake R&D that focuses on creating new businesses in five areas. These areas are construction and infrastructure, carbon dioxide (CO2) and waste plastic utilization, energy management, nature sustainability, and life sciences.
We will increase success rates by enhancing the synthesis, catalyst, processing, and other technologies that we have amassed across the inorganic, organic, and polymer fields or have gained from collaborating with external entities. In choosing these five areas, we will maintain our specialization approach while becoming even more conscious of the need to tackle environmental issues. In energy management, for example, we aim to contribute to decarbonization by using energy-saving heat insulation and dissipation materials. On the nature sustainability front, we are exploring the use of natural raw materials and techniques to foster efficient plant and animal growth without harming biodiversity.

Company R&D
- Polyimide and Specialty Products R&D Dept.
The Polyimide and Specialty Products R&D Dept. is engaged in design/development of material and process, for diverse types of specialty products including powders, varnishes, films, fibers, and membranes, focusing on polyimide based on UBE's original biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA).
The developed products are applied to fabricated materials for electrical and IT components such as flexible circuit substrates, and gas separation apparatus such as air separation. The department works with customers to improve of performance and quality.
- Inorganic Products R&D Dept.
- Engineering Plastics R&D Dept.
We are developing composite materials using various engineering plastics, new nylons, and film and monofilament materials containing them. We are also focusing on plastic recycling and biopolymers in response to a growing demand for environmentally friendly materials. As a solution provider, we contribute to our customers by providing advanced and timely technical support for materials, improvements and molding, utilizing our fundamental technologies such as material design, molding technologies and analysis technologies. Through strengthening collaboration among the three development sites in Japan, Spain and Thailand, we are actively expanding our engineering plastics business globally.
- Chemicals R&D Dept.
Chemical Development Department provides suitable technical support and new product to solve customer's target issues and any problem on the business filed of fine chemicals, high-performance coating and industrial chemicals.
In addition, the Department works on CO2 utilization and chemical recycling of used polymer to contribute to global environmental problems based on the own technological platform.
- CMC Development Department
- Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory
A major objective of the Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory is to discover pharmaceuticals that promise to be beneficial to society, and realize the market release of proprietary drugs. UBE carries out new drug research on its own as well as jointly with pharmaceutical companies under a collaborative framework. In both cases, the laboratory sets specific research goals to rapidly develop candidate compounds and realize results, in order to expand the pipeline through the successive development of new drugs.
